AUNT DAISY
ADDRESS AT OPERA HOUSE. EFFORT IN AID OF PATRIOTIC FUNDS. The Opera House was well filled on Friday night when the Masterton Townswomen’s Guild invited “Aunt Daisy - ’ to Masterton to assist the Patriotic Funds. The first half of the programme consisted of musical items. Mr J. Grey's Orchestra played two bright numbers. Mrs Miller Hope’s concert party contributed choral numbers. An Irish jig by Ola Curry and Norah McMullan, a vocal solo by Hera Tauwharc, a duet by Mona Fulton and Helen Bannister; in costume, a recitation “Aunt Daisy and the Bull,” was given by Mrs R. Miller, and ballet by pupils of Miss Joan Tandy. The Guild Singing Circle conducted by Miss Dorthy O’Donnell also gave two items. The Drama Circle excelled itself, under the direction of Mr Jack Kennedy, in its presentation of a play entitled “A Marriage has been Disarranged,” the players being Mesdames Douglas, Pickering. Whittaker, Graham, Wiltshire, Downes, Barber and Brown.
In an interval “Aunt Daisy” shook hands with every woman in the hall. She was then introduced to the audience by the president (Mrs Copp) who presented her with a bouquet, which was kindly made by Mrs Gibbs. The Mayoress, Mrs T. Jordan, and Mrs J. Robertson extended a welcome to “Aunt Daisy.” “Aunt Daisy” gave a most interesting running commentary on her travels abroad, dwelling chiefly on matters of interest to housewives. She explained interesting labour saving devices she saw in modern homes and also made reference to the aquarium at Honolulu, a cafeteria in Chicago 86 floors up, the Glasgow Exhibition, and to pedigree stock in the Old Country. The evening was brought to a close by the singing of “God Defend New Zealand,” after which committee members entertained “Aunt Daisy” at supper at Mrs Snowsill’s residence.
