RATIONING IN FORCE
i SUGAR AND HOSIERY I — LIMITED STOCKING SUPPLIES. WOMEN TO GET ONE PAIR IN THREE MONTHS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The rationing of sugar and women’s hosiery came into effect today in accordance with Rationing Orders issued during the weekend by the Minister of Supply and Munitions, Mr Sullivan.Till further notice the ration of sugar will be at the rate of 12 ounces a week to private consumers. Mr Sullivan said the annual ration of stockings could not be determined at this stage, but sufficient finished stocks and raw materials for manufacture were on hand to enable every woman over 16 years to obtain one pair of stockings during the next three months. He had accordingly requested the Rationing Controller to make a coupon available for the purchase of one pair of stockings during the next three months, at the end of which period the position would be reviewed. It was emphasised by the Minister that retailers of stockings could not meet the demand if all the holders of ration books presented their coupons for stockings immediately. He therefore made a special appeal to those who had stockings at the present time to refrain from purchasing in the early part of the rationing period. Women’s full-length hosiery of silk, art silk, lisle or any mixture of these materials may not be sold in future without the surrender of a coupon.
The coupon to be used over the next three months is number “X" 1 in the “X” sheet of the women's ration book. This coupon will be available from today to July 25. The ration bo’ok must be produced when the purchase is made. The retailer will cut out the coupon.
The coupon may be redeemed at any shop. Gymnasium hose is not included in the rationing scheme.
