JAPANESE FLEET

SIGHTED OFF CHINESE COAST DRIVEN AWAY BY BATTERIES. FIERCE FIGHTING ON KWANTUNG FRONT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, April 25. The Chungking radio says that a Japanese fleet was observed south of the Fukien coast on Thursday and adds that Chinese batteries fired at the ships which steamed off southward. The radio also stated that in China the Japanese have been repulsed with heavy losses after pushing northward from west of Tsengshink, on the Kwantung front. It is indicative of the ferocity of the fighting that carloads of Japanese dead and wounded were observed moving to Canton on Monday night. A Japanese detachment driving from Shenkang to Tsunghua was also defeated, and while retreating the Japanese set fire to villages.
