NAVAL AWARD
TO YOUNG NEW ZEALANDER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON,. This Day. The King has approved the award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Temporary Sub-Lieutenant G. J. Macdonald, R.N.Z.N.V.R., “for service in attacks on convoy.”
This 20-year-old Wellingtonian, who joined the R.N.V.R. in June, 1938, left New Zealand on active service at the cutbreak of war in September, 1939, as a gunner on a merchant ship. After 18 months at sea he qualified for a commission at a naval college in England, passing out top of his division with record marks. He then received special training in motor torpedo-boat ■work, after which he was posted on the first flotilla known as the “Fighting First.” Interesting and exciting experiences followed, culminating in his appointment to the command of one of the ships of this flotilla.
