WAR IN PACIFIC
AIR ATTACK ON RABAUL DIRECT HITS ON BUILDINGS & DOCK. FIGHTING IN EAST INDIES. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) RUGBY, April 23. A South-West Pacific Area communique states: “On Tuesday afternoon, our Air Force made a surprise attack on enemy establishments in New Britain in the vicinity of Rabaul. Direct hits were made on buildings. On the following morning we again hit the dock, which was the main objective. “In the Netherlands East Indies, fighting is still in progress with elements of the Australian and Dutch establishments operating jointly in the interior.”
EVERYTHING DESTROYED BY RETREATING DEFENDERS IN PANAY. (Received This Day, 11.0 a.m.) LONDON. April 23. The Tokio radio states that the United States and Filipino forces completely destroyed everything before retreating from the central area of Panay Island.
