FRENCH SHIPS

TAKEN OVER BY JAPAN IN FAR EAST. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.0 a.m.) LONDON, April 23. It is officially stated that when Japan entered the war there were nine ocean-going French merchantmen in the Far East, aggregating 85,000 gross tons, in addition to coasters and local craft. The Japanese are now reported to have requisitioned 50,000 tons, which almost certainly are ocean-going vessels, but it would not be in the piiblic interest to disclose their whereabouts.
