GREY DUCK
NEGLECT BY ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. The neglect of any attempt by the Wellington Acclimatisation Society to conserve grey ducks was referred to at last night’s meeting of the North Wairarapa Committee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. Mr R. V. Mason said nothing was being done to help the grey duck, because of the expense involved in fencing properties and in feeding the birds. On the other hand, he said, mallard were being bred and distributed. The secretary, Mr H. W. Dale, agreed with Mr Mason but pointed out that under the rules of the society the council could not spend licence holders’ money to buy food to give to property owners, because of the possibility of abuse. Mr Mason: “If the society can buy food for mallard and feed them, then surely it can do something more for the grey duck than is being done.”
