DIG TRENCHES
MR J. ROBERTSON’S ADVICE MASTERTON’S POSITION. START MADE ON COLLEGE GROUNDS. “The situation in Masterton is such that I consider slit trenches should be dug,” said Mr J. Robertson, M.P.,, this morning. “Anyone who knows the position of New Zealand in the war strategy of the Pacific would not like to say that any part of New Zealand is not a vulnerable area.” Mr Robertson added that the local Public Works engineer would be able to advise residents as to the correct procedure in planning trenches. A start was made this morning with the digging of slit trenches on the Wairarapa College grounds. The party included Mr J. Robertson, M.P., the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, the chairman of the College Board of Governors, Mr W. R. Nicol, and several members of the board and the Principal, Mr F. J. Gair. The work will be continued by the boys of the school and other volunteer helpers. Mr Robertson returned home with a pumpkin and Mr Jordan with a melon. These vegetables were awarded to those who were first to arrive on the ground. Mr Robertson secured the first prize and Mr Jordan the second.
