TASMAN VOYAGER
EXTRADITION ORDER MADE IN HOBART. EFFORT TO SECURE RELEASE. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) HOBART, April 21. A strong effort is being made to prevent the extradition to New Zealand of Richard Humphreys, who is charged with escaping from Waikeria BorstalInstitute. When Humphreys was again before the Police Court today, the magistrate, Colonel Clark, granted an application for his extradition order to serve the remainder of his sentence at the Borstal institution for the theft of a lumber jacket. Counsel for Humphreys, Mr H. Baker, intimated that a writ of habeas coipus would be served on the same day on the New Zealand police officer into whose custody the magistrate committed Humphreys. The magistrate said he had to consider the matter of sending Humphreys back on a long journey foi a trivial offence. However, it was not a trivial offence to escape from custody. Mr Baker submitted that it might be possible to discharge Humphreys on recompensing the owner of the yacht in which he had made the long voyage across the Tasman. The magistrate said he could not alter his decision, whereupon Mr Baker gave notice of his intention to bring the matter before the Tasmanian Supreme Court at the earliest opportunity.
