EKETAHUNA

BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the ordinary meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council Mr W. Olsen (Mayor) presided, there being also present Crs. E. M. Simmers, D. Ryan, P. S. Page, K. Marenzi, R. Gallagher. An apology for absence was received from Mr M. Priest.

It was reported that seven building permits had been issued during the year the fees derived therefrom amounting to £B. The total value of the buildings constructed or in the course of construction, alterations and additions, amounted to £2659. It was reported by the librarian that 4,975 books had been issued for the period April 1, 1941 to March 31, 1942. The subscribers now number 102. The total subscriptions and extra book fees collected during the year amounted to £53 13s lid. Ninety new publications had been purchased and placed on the shelves of the library. BIBLE SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Eketahuna branch of the British and For-, eign Bible Society was held in the Anglican Hall when Mr J. F. Baillie presided over a fair attendance of members. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Rev. I. K. Hopper; vice-presidents, to act as committee, the Rev. G. E. Williams, Mr J. F. Baillie, Mesdames Christie, Gallagher, J. F. Baillie, H. P. Hansen, J. Jones and Miss Anderson; secretary, Miss Moana Hooper. The Rev. I. K. Hopper gave a short, address on the advisability of having 1 ' the Bible in every home. The president introduced Mrs V. Wakelin, the organising secretary, who gave an interesting talk on the Bible Society's activities. Afternoon tea served by the committee brought an interesting meeting to a close. Service of Prayer. The weekly intercession service was held in St. Cuthbert’s Anglican Church yesterday. The Rev. I. K. Hopper conducted the service. There' was a fair attendance. Defence of Pacific. On Monday evening Mr Robertson, M.P., gave a very interesting talk to the members of the Home Guard, on the defence of the Pacific.
