CARTERTON

BOWLING GRADY MEDALS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The final game of the season for the Grady medals was played on the Carterton green last evening between Messrs J. Reid (sub.) and W. Higgison (s) of Grey town, challengers, and Messrs H. Simmonds and W. C. M. Sorensen (s), holders, the latter proving winners by 25/17. Sorensen played an excellent game, his drawing in particular being good. The senior championship of the Carterton Ladies’ Bowling Club has been won by Miss Lamb who beat Mrs Thompson in the final and will hold the Gordon Hughan’s Rose Bowl for the year. Mrs Colson won the junior championship beating Mrs Adams in the final game. The final of the pairs competition will be’ played on Saturday between Mesdames Colson and Thompson (s) and Mrs Swan and Miss Lamb (s). Other members of the club will hold a pairs tourney.

BOY SCOUTS CARD TOURNAMENT. The weekly card tournament of the Carterton Scout Committee was held in the Bandroom on Wednesday night. There was a fair attendance and the prizes were won as follow: —Ladies: Mrs Birchall, 1; Mrs Sowman, 2. Men: Mrs Edwards, 1; Mr W. Haste, 2. The consolation prizes went to Mrs H. Goodin and Mr G. Brown. LEAGUE OF MOTHERS MONTHLY MEETING. Mrs R. H. Every presided over a good attendance of members and friends at the monthly meeting of the League of Mothers held in the St. Andrew’s Hall yesterday afternoon. An admission service was held, three new’ members being enrolled. Members signified their willingness to provide the free supper for soldiers on Sunday. Mrs L. Knutson’s singing of two solos was greatly appreciated. The president referred to the urgent need for more workers for camouflage net-making. Miss F. Pickett, of the Health Department, Wellington, gave a most interesting address on sanitation, hygiene and personal preparedness in the event of an air raid. She stressed the necessity of chewing a piece of rubber should a bombing raid occur, and putting cotton wool smeared with vaseline, paraffin, melted beeswax or melted candle grease in the ears to protect the eardrums. Children should be kept well under control and not allowed to wander away from home and be provided with identification discs. In diabetic cases care should be taken to see that such people were provided with a strong card with the amount of their insulin and their diet written on it. A vote of thanks was accorded Miss Pickett. Personal Items. The Rev. J. A. Daglish, who has been in charge of the Carterton Methodist Circuit, is now a chaplain in Feilding. His place in Carterton has been filled by the Rev. G. S. Cook, of Otaki. Mr J. E. Blade, who formerly resided in Carterton and was a well known cyclist, returned today to Auckland after having been on a visit to the town. Church Service. A Church of England service will be held at Longbush at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday next. Carterton Racing Club. A meeting of stewards of the Carterton Racing Club will be held at the secretary’s office tonight. REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. An excellent comedy, “Hullabaloo,” featuring Frank Morgan and Virginia Grey, will be shown tonight, along with “The Lone Wolf Keeps a Date,” in which Warren William and Francis Robinson have the chief roles.
