NEW PROCESS

EXTRACTION OF MAGNESIUM. IMPORTANT CANADIAN DISCOVERY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, April 15. A Montreal scientist, Dr. L. M. Fidgeon, is reported to have discovered a new method for the extraction of magnesium which is likely to have a considerable bearing on Canada’s contribution of that mineral to the resources of the Allies. Such importance is attached to it that the United States Government has asked special permission to use the process and, both in the United States and Canada, plants are being established to apply the discovery on a commercial scale. It is expected that production will begin by midsummer. The output will amount at the outset to some two tons of metal daily. As additional units are built the rate will be increased to 20 tons daily.

The process, which employs a new thermal method of metallic abstraction, will be commercialised by a new Government-owned company, and the Government will also spend more than £1,000,000 on the initial plant.
