MENACING THE CHINESE IN BURMA JAPANESE ATTACK ON WEST. ASSUMING MAJOR PROPORTIONS

A Chungking spokesman indicated that enemy ships are now landing two divisions at Rangoon, while over three additional divisions are en route. It was disclosed that the position of the Chinese forces engaged below Mandalay has been made more difficult by the British retreat on the Irrawaddy River sector, westward, dangerously exposing the Chinese right flank. Simultaneously a new danger has appeared on the Chinese left, with the Japanese drive north-westward from Thailand into the Shan States, which is assuming the proportions of a major offensive. WILL BE HELD NO QUESTION OF SURRENDERING CORREGIDOR. GENERAL WAINWRIGHT’S DECLARATION. WASHINGTON, April 15. “Corregidor can and will be held. There can be no question of surrendering this mighty fortress to the enemy. It will be defended with all the resources at our command.” This inspiring message was conveyed to the defending troops by-General Wainwright, who added: “Major-Gen-eral George Moore, commander at Fort Mills, joins me wholeheartedly in the unalterable decision to hold this island, together with its auxiliary forts.”
STILL FIGHTING DUTCH IN EAST INDIES. MANY STRONGHOLDS BEING DEFENDED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10 a.m.) RUGBY, April 16. The Netherlands Minister (M. Aerssen), in presenting his credentials to the Governor»General of Australia confirmed that Netherlands forces were, still resisting in the Netherlands East Indies and that the Dutch were holding many strongholds. The Netherlands land, sea and air forces, said M. Aerssen, were determined to continue fighting until victory was achieved.
