Shop Day Proceeds.

The proceeds from the Shop Day held in Masterton by the Tinui ladies yesterday amounted to £ 90 14s sd. Ration Books. During the first two days of this week 349,107 ration books have been issued in New Zealand. It has been estimated that a total of 1.500,000 may be required. On Tuesday 203,768 books were issued in the whole Dominion. Childrens’ Gifts. “John Bull” would like to thank the children of the Te Ore Ore and Solway Schools for handing in the proceeds of their ergot collection. Te Ore Ore’s total was 4s 3d, while Solway’s was 3s 6d. Men in camp and overseas will appreciate this gift. Fall from Ladder.

An elderly man named Charles Henry Bird, of Tinui, was admitted to the Masterton Hospital yesterday suffering from an injury to his neck. He fell off a ladder. This morning his condition was reported to be comfortable.

Energetic Ladies. The Patriotic Committee secretary recently received and placed on display at the Midland Hotel a sample parcel of the 15s Prisoner of War Parcel. Apparently the descriptive poster became mislaid, for the secretary was somewhat horrified when he found an energetic ladies’ committee just preparing to raffle or otherwise dispose of his packet under the title of a box of groceries. Education of Soldiers.

Approval has been given by the Education Department for members of Territorial and other defence forces to be enrolled at technical schools or classes wherever such classes meet their requirements, and it has been decided that any soldiers thus admitted are to be regarded as paying pupils with fees remitted, whether or not they are entitled in the ordinary way to hold free places. This decision, of which the Taranaki Education Board was advised yesterday, places soldiers in the same position as members of the air cadet training scheme, for whom similar arrangements were approved in November, 1941.
