GREYTOWN

MAGISTRATE’S COURT SALE OF LIQUOR AFTER HOURS. (“Times-Age” Special.) ' The monthly sitting of the Magistrates’ Court was held at Greytown yesterday. Mr H. J. Lawry, S.M., presided. Norman Alexander Carswell was fined £1 with costs 10s for having been found on licensed premises after hours. John Rowlands, licensee of the Greytown Hotel, was charged with having sold liquor after hours on February 21.

The Magistrate fined Rowlands £7, with costs 10s.

In a second charge against Rowlands, of having kept the hotel open for the sale of liquor, decision was reserved on a point of law.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Greytown School Committee was held last night, there being present Messrs H. G. Carter (chairman), R. O’Neale, E. J. Galyer, F. Dennes (treasurer), W. Grigg and Mrs Knell (secretary). The headmaster reported inter alia: The average attendance for the month was: Primary 272, Secondary 39. The collection of ergot by the children had been most satisfactory. One pupil, Arnold Barrett, had collected l;]lbs. A daily distribution of apples was being made to the pupils.' Two hundred and twenty-nine books had arrived for the school library. Tile secondary pupils were engaged in making nets for defence purposes.

In terms of a communication received from the Education Board the committee decided not to allow pacifists to give religious instruction in the school.

The Education Board wrote stating that the school accounts would be audited as soon as possible, the work having been delayed owing to a decrease in the staff. Advice was received from the Board that one dozen new chairs would be iorwarded for use in the district high school.

It was decided to ask the E.P.S. committees to provide for the transport of

school children to their homes in the event of the buses being taken for Army purposes in an emergency. It was decided to write to the secretary of the E.P.S. works section requesting that the slit trenches at the school be completed. At present they are sufficient for only one third of the pupils.

TOWN HALL TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. Franchot Tone and Warren William have the chief roles in the sensational drama, “Trail of the Vigilantes,” which will be shown tonight. An excellent comedy, "Barnacle Bill,” will also be presented.
