MASTERTON Y.M.C.A.
SERVICE TO COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES REVIEWED. GENEROUS HELP APPRECIATED. In presenting the 37th annual report the directors of the Y.M.C.A. of Masterton state that much has been accomplished and that the institution is continuing to serve a very real need in Masterton and the community. The report gives details of membership and the many activities of the association. Special reference is made to the work of the Ladies’ Auxiliary which, it states, has been a very live company during the past year, with Mrs H. E. Pither as president and Mrs C. Pickering as secretary. The auxiliary has done great service in connection with the fighting services. The report gives details of the steps taken by the Y.M.C.A. in providing refreshments, entertainments, etc., for the men of the services. Referring to the finances, the report records the association’s indebtedness to many faithful workers and generous supporters in the community who assist the association in practical ways by work and service, thus helping materially to keep down expenses. “The report proceeds: “We commenced the year with a credit balance of £2lB 15s 2d, and finished with a credit balance of £ll6 17s Bd, which, in view of the fact that no special appeal was made during the year, must be considered satisfactory. The generous support of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust has been, of great help, while the T. G. Macarthy Trust, Masterton Borough Council and Ladies’ Auxiliary have again contributed in no small degree to the financial side of our efforts. We appreciate also assistance from the Masterton Rotary Club. While we have every reason to be thankful for the support of the community towards the work of the association, it must be emphasised that our activities during the coming year under the heading of Fighting Services will materially increase our expenditure, and on the other side some of our normal avenues of income will of necessity be reduced. It is, therefore, ‘important that every effort be maintained towards widening the scope of interest and thus increasing the number of contributors. Your directors have endeavoured to maintain the maximum of service with the minimum of expense and in this direction have been ably supported by your general secretary.” The following directors retire by effluxion of time but are eligible and offer themselves for re-election: Messrs J. A. Kennedy, E. M. Hodder and R. Keltie. Messrs J. D. O’Connor and G. Masters also retire but are not seeking re-election.
Thanks are expressed to the Press, the hon. treasurer, Mr C. Sutherland, the hon. auditor, Mr F. E. Wells and to the general secretary, Mr C. W. Gaze. The report is signed by the chairman, Mr E. M. Hodder.
