HEAVY CALL
ON GERMAN AIR STRENGTH i IN ASSAULT ON MALTA. ESTIMATES OF THE FORCES ENGAGED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) RUGBY, April 9. Well over half of Germany’s bomber strength and half of her fighter strength is being used on the Western and Mediterranean fronts, according to the latest information in London. Malta is facing about 500 German aircraft, of which about half probably are bombers. On April 7 about 300 bomber sorties were flown against the island, in addition to fifty or more by fighters. The bombers were almost entirely Junkers 88s, with some Junkers 87s. Italian bombers are not often seen there. On several previous days a hundred bombers attacked and at least once over 200. This involves a terrific rate of operation for the German Air Force and it is estimated that on Tuesday many German bombers must have made three sorties each. Yesterday there were probably not more than a hundred bombers inoperation. It is thought that the Germans probably are straining their crews and aircraft as heavily as at any time in the Battle of Britain in an attempt to break Malta before it breaks them.
