NAVAL OPERATIONS
IN PROGRESS IN BAY OF BENGAL SOME MERCHANTMEN SUNK AIR ATTACK ON ENEMY AIRCRAFT-CARRIER. NEAR MISSES REPORTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, April 9. In connection with the sinking of the cruisers Dorsetshire and Cornwall it was learned in London that it became apparent on April 6 that an enemy naval force, including an aircraft carrier, was operating in the Bay of Bengal. Enemy surface craft attacked merchantmen. This force is believed to be operating from the Andaman Islands. It is officially announced in New Delhi that recent naval and air attacks against shipping in the Bay of Bengal resulted in the sinking of several merchantmen. Between 400 and 500 survivors have been landed at various points on the Orissa coast. The Rome radio declared that a naval battle was going on in the Bay of Bengal.
A message from Colombo states that an air attack was made on enemy naval forces. There were npar misses on one cf the enemy’s aircraft carriers.
