ITALIAN HEAVY CRUISER IN MEDITERRANEAN ACHIEVEMENT OF BRITISH .SUBMARINE. DESTROYER & AIR ESCORT DEFIED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, April 9. Another heavy Italian cruiser has been sunk. This 10,000-ton vessel armed with Bin. guns, was torpedoed in the Central Mediterranean by a British submarine commanded by Lieutenant-Commander E. P. Tcmpkinson, D.S.O. and bar. The cruiser was escorted by destroyers and aircraft. Eight minutes after the torpedo hit she broke up -and sank, and a destroyer was seen picking up survivors. Five of the seven 10 ; 000-ton cruisers with which Italy started the war are now known to have been lost. Lieutenant-Commander Tompkinson has an exceptionally fine record, his D.S.O. having been awarded for “outstanding bravery, skill and resolution.” He was responsible recently for the sinking of a 10,000-ton enemy freighter on its way to Libya.
