PATRIOTIC APPEAL

CAMPAIGN IN MASTERTON. (Contributed.) Recently “John Bull” expressed pride that he was born an Englishman, and as a result he heard from many of his good and generous friends who were born in other parts of the British Isles and the Dominions beyond the seas. “John Bull” is too old to adopt the idea of a Commonwealth of Nations, and he still believes that the British nation is one of the greatest forces for good in the world. As a true Englishman. “John Bull” adopts as Englishmen such famous people as Dr. Livingstone, of Lanarkshire, or Geo. Bernard Shaw, of Dublin. In the hope that they will bear with his pride (which he still feels), “John Bull” dedicates the following lines to all his friends:— Half a quid —hundred quid, None will be squandered; John Bull has nots of friends — Over- five hundred. Scots from the North of Tweed, Irish from Donnymede, Men of New Zealand’s breed Make up the five hundred. Taxes to right of them, taxes to left of them, Taxes for centuries—can’t scare the five hundred. Stormed at by shot and shell. Our boys have earned a spell, Help John Bull treat them well— Who’ll make Six Hundred?
