EFFECTIVE ATTACKS
ON JAPANESE ISLAND BASES DESTRUCTION OF GROUNDED PLANES. ENEMY FIGHTER SHOT DOWN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) MELBOURNE, April 8. Koepang as well as Lae was attacked by Allied planes yesterday. The full story of the raids is told in a communique which was issued today by the Prime Minister, Mr Curtin. A direct hit was scored on five or six grounded enemy fighters at Lae, and this was followed by a fire, it states. Further hits were also made on grounded bombers, but the results could not be assessed. A Japanese Zero fighter which attempted interception was caught in concentrated fire from the bombers and shot down. In the attack on Koepang, Japanese fighters three times attempted to prevent the bombers from reaching the objective, but in spite of this the attack was carried through and bombs were dropped in the target area. From all these operations one of our aircraft has not returned.
