CARTERTON

THE DAIRY INDUSTRY SEASON’S PROSPECTS. (“Times-Age" Special.) Throughout the district dairy farmers are experiencing a good season, and the butterfat returns should establish a record in many instances. It is noted with satisfaction that more care is now being taken by dairy farmers in the selection of animals fox’ their herds. In the “bad old days” too often cows were indiscriminately purchased at auction and placed in the herd, ultimately proving to be an expensive investment. Gradually the farmer has come to realise that unless his herd is composed of good quality animals he cannot obtain the highest profit from his land.

Many Carterton farmers have purchased high class animals and thus built up theh’ herds with most successful results. Particularly has this been the case in the Dalefield district where several farmers have set an example which could well be emulated in many other parts of the Wairarapa.

A PROSPEROUS TOWN MODERN APPEARANCE. The town of Carterton has long since passed from the village stage and its business centre contains shops of modern type able to successfully compete in trade with other larger centres. The borough council has contributed in a large measure in the. work of altering the appearance of the town from the hamlet stage with its inferior roads—many of which in winter were “seas of mud”—treacherous footpaths and poor lighting service to a town with good roads and footpaths and splendid lighting though, of course, in these days of “black outs” the latter is operated on a limited scale. The residential area of Carterton is one local citizens are proud of. and the gardens—flower and vegetable—testify to the taste and energy of the occupiers. The prosperity enjoyed by Carterton is to a considerable extent due to the farmers of the surrounding districts, emphasising the value of small farms to a community. Modern farming methods and more men upon the land should in the years to come make Carterton an even 1 more prosperous centre than it is today.

WOMEN’S DIVISION ANNUAL MEETING. Mrs Ordish, president, presided over the tenth annual meeting of the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Apologies were received from Messrs K. Hodder, W. Linton, L. Rayner and C. Jensen. The report and balance sheet were read and adopted on the motion of Mrs Maitland, seconded by Mrs E. Allen. Mrs Walsh read a report on the social club’s activities, and Mrs P. Hodder gave a report on the Gardening Circle. Mrs H. Hodder was thanked for her splendid efforts in running social gatherings. During an interval in the proceedings Miss Manley was asked to accept and open the many parcels, which she did amid applause. Miss Manley suitably returned thanks. Card Party.
