Soldier Injured. Trooper Ronald Ross was admitted to Masterton Hospital on Saturday afternoon. Fie was believed to have suffered fractured ribs. The injury, it is reported, was received while he was playing football. Boy Injured. A boy of 10 years. Francis James Gyde, of 33 Michael Street, was admitted to the Masterton Hospital yesterday afternoon suffering from a scalp wound. The injury, it is reported, was received from a stone, allegedly thrown by an adult. The boy’s condition was reported this morning to be satisfactory. United Tennis Club. The United Tennis Club’s season was officially closed on Saturday, when a number of friendly games were played. Afternoon tea was provided by the president, Mr J. Jameson. Mr J. A. Kennedy, in the absence of the president, expressed thanks to those who had assisted and to the visitors for their attendance. Man and Wife in Hospital. With a wound in her forehead, a Meeanee woman, Mrs Elizabeth Saxton, aged 57, was admitted to the Napier Public Hospital on Friday. She was found walking along a road, bleeding profusely. The police later went to her home, where they found her husband, who is aged 65, sitting in a chair with a knife wound in the throat. He also was admitted to hospital. Neither is in a serious condition. Soldier’s Death. Soldiers in a Hawke’s Bay military encampment at 8 o'clock on Saturday night heard the report of a rifle, and later found Private Jack Ernest Cross, aged 19, lying in a paddock nearby with a bullet wound in the head and a rifle beside him. He was admitted to the Memorial Hospital, Hastings, and died a short time later. Private Cross, whose parents reside at Clive, was attached to the First Hawke’s Bay Battalion. He had been on leave on Friday night and it was shortly after he had returned to camp that the shot was heard. Pigeon Racing. The Masterton Homing Pigeon Club held a race from Hastings, a distance of 110 miles. The weather conditions were perfect. The birds were liberated by Mr W. Wallace, of Hastings.
