PATRIOTIC APPEAL
THE NEED FOR SACRIFICE. (Contributed). Last night "John Bull'’ was reading a cynical poet of 200 years ago who wrote: ■ God and the soldier we alike adore. When danger threatens, not before; C The danger past both are alike re* quited, God is forgotten and the soldier slight-, ed.’’ At the time of the Great Queen’s Jubilee, Kipling in his Recessional put into words his fear that we, in the midst of our prosperity, should forget both our God and our soldiers who under God are our defenders; “Far called our navies fade away, On dune and headland sink the fire, And all our pomp of yesterday Is one with Nineveh and Tyre, Judge of the nations spare us yet, Lest we forget, Lest we forget.” ■ A nation that is not prepared to make some sacrifice for its defenders does not deserve to be defended. It is a tragic thought that 95 per cent of our adult population has not called on "John Bull.”
