CATTLE FAIR
PRICES AT MASTERTON YESTERDAY KEEN COMPETITION IN ALL SECTIONS. READY SALE FOR BEEF. The Wairarapa Stock and Station Agents report as follows:—We held our first autumn cattle fair yesterday when a full y» rc * ln ® ° all classes of cattle came forward to a large attendance of buyers representing Man watu. Pahiatua, Martinborough, Eketahuna and local buyers. Owing to the exceptional grass season which we have experienced it was anticipated that a strong demand would be maintained for all classes of stock, and this proved to be the case. Geneially speak ing the condition of the catt e yarded was first class. In the grown bullock section competition was at all times keen and realisations were fully up to vendors expectations In the young cattle section, however, the demand was indeed strong and realisations here were in many cases in excess of vendors’- ideas of value. We are able to repoit a complete clearance under the hammer. A good line of 3yr old bullocks sold on account of Mr D .Thompson topped the market, rcalsing £lO 12s 6d. A similar of good cattle on account of Mrs A. M. Bunny made lOgns, and an attractive offering on account of Mr C. Olliver fell to the bid of £lO. Other lines of good 3’/ayr bullocks made from £9 10s to £9 17s 6d, while a line of 2‘A and 3>/ z yr old steers sold on account of Messrs Holmes and Scott realised £lO 3s. Some particularly good lines of 2’Ayr steers were offered and sold under very keen competition. In this section an exceptional y good line offered on account of Mr Geo. Shaw realised £lO 15s, also a good line on account of Mrs A. M. Bunny made £9 15s. Other 2>/ z yr old steers made from £7 10s, £8 £8 15s up to £9 2s 6d. A good yarding of 18mos cattle sold under spirited competition and these realised up to £7, the top price in this section being obtained for a line on account of Messrs Laing Bros., Tiraumea, at £7; an “Awapiripiri” line realised £G 16s, and an offering on account of Mr H W Christiansen £6 12s. Other sales according to quality and condition were from £5 to £6 10s. Eighteen-months heifers made from £3 to £4 Ils, the latter price being for a line on account of Mr C. M. Ross. 2 1 /2yr old heifers made from £5 4s to £6 12s 6d; 3yr old empty heifers on account of Mr O. J. Welch realised £7. Store cows were in keen demand and realised— according to quality and condition —£5, £5 10s and up to £7, the latter price being being obtained for a line on account of Mr L. T. Daniell. A similar line sold on account of “Te Mai” Station and Messrs Laing Bros, realised £6 Is. Several pens of cows and calves were offered and competition in this section was particularly keen, realisations being from £6 10s to £8 5s and up to £8 12s. Fat cattle: A good yarding of fat cattle came forward and well finished beef met with a steady sale. Fat bullocks realised from £lO up to £l2, fat heifers £7 ss, £8 and up to £8 10s and an exceptionally nice pen of fat heifers on account of Messrs J. G. McKay realised 9s. Good fat cows made from £7 up to £8 10s, others not quite so finished brought from £5 15s to £6 17s; vealers, £2 to £2 15s, and runners up to £3 6s.
Sheep: A small yarding of sheep came forward and here, in keeping with the cattle sale competition was keen, fat sheep selling on a par with last week's quotations. In the store section, however, for lambs and wethers we have to report a firming tendency. Few ewes were yarded and the sale of these, was somewhat restricted, 2th ewes making from 20s to 21s and other mixed aged ewes from 14s up to 17s 9d. A line of woolly wether lambs sold on account of Mr Alex McGregor realised from 17s to 19s lid. Other medium sorts of woolly wether lambs made from 13s to 13s lOd. Black-face meaty sorts of lambs made from 16s up to 18s 3d; small ewe lambs from 10s to 15s; other mixed sex lambs according to condition and quality, from 7s to 11s. Several pens of 2th wethers were yarded and these sold under very keen competition realising 20s 7d to 225, while a line of 4th wethers on account of “Clifton Grove” made 22s 9d.
