WAGE INCREASE

TO MEET HIGHER COST OF LIVING

GRANTED BY ARBITRATION COURT. ADDITIONAL FIVE PER CENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. In a judgment delivered today by Mr Justice Tyndall, on an application by the New Zealand Engineers’ and Drivers’ Union for a further general order increasing the wage rates of all workers under present awards, the Court of Arbitration made a further general order whereby an increase is granted to meet the increased cost of living. From April 7, the wages of workers are to be increased by five per cent of wages up to and including £5 for men, £2 10s for women and £1 10s for juniors. The wages of those receiving more than these amounts are to be increased by only five per cent of the amounts stated. In a memorandum, the Court stated that there had been a definite acceleration in the retail prices index over the past four months and that the powers of the Court under the Emergency Regulations had been extended since December. _ The employers’ representative ,Mr C. Prime) dissented from the judgment.
