No Publication on Friday. - The “Tirqes-Age” will not be published on Friday (Good Friday), but will be published as usual on Easter Monday. No Club Football. At 1 the annual meeting of the Dannevirke Rugby Sub-Union it was decided that as practically all footballers in the district and many of those who have been serving on the management committee are at present serving in the armed forces, all club football be suspended for 1942. Building Permits. Restrictions on the use of building material are indicated by* the number and value of building permits issued by the Masterton Borough and County councils in March. Only four permits were issued, for £368. In March, 1941, there were nine permits for a value of £1,860. No buildings permits were issued by the Masterton County Council last month, whereas in March, 1941, there were two for a value of £1,745. Meat Production. The official figures of killings at the Dominion's freezing works from October 1 till March 14, as issued by the New Zealand Meat Prodeers' Board, show that lamb killings to that date total 7,597,678 carcases, this being a decrease of 78,300 carcases compared with the killings up till March 15 last season. Wether mutton killings are 510,380 carcases, and ewe mutton killings 1,185,986 carcases, compared with 391,928 and 1,149,705 carcases, respectively, last season.

Mayor of Wellington Fined. A plea of guilty was entered yesterday in the Magistrate’s Court at Rotorua by T. C. A. Hislop, Mayor of Wellington, to a charge of fishing in the Tongariro River on March 6 without a licence. He was convicted and fined £5 and costs. The conservator of fish and game, Mr A. Kean, stated that when Hislop was asked by a ranger to produce his licence he had been unable to do so, but later in the day had taken out a licence. The defendant had said that he had been in a hurry, and for this reason had omitted to take out the licence before he began to fish. Imported Goods Licences. The procedure to be adopted with goods ordered under' 1941 import licences but which do not arrive by June 30 next was explained last evening by the Acting-Minister of Customs, Mr Nordmeyer. “It has been decided that the importations after June 30 of goods ordered under fifth period licences will be permitted under special sixth period licences, which will be granted for the purpose by Collectors of Customs on surrender of fifth period licences in respect of similar goods to at least an equivalent value,, provided that collectors are satisfied that firm orders for the goods concerned have been placed by the licence holders and accepted by the overseas suppliers prior to April 1, 1942,” said the Minister.

Bankruptcies. > No bankruptcies were recorded in the Wairarapa last month. So far this year only one has occurred, the same state of affairs as was reported at the corresponding date last year. Wool Destroyed by Fire. Damage estimated at £27,000 was caused, byffire-'on Monday in the wool store at the Pukeuri Freezing Works, Oamaru. Spontaneous combustion in wool, some 200 bales of which were in the store, is believed to have caused the Are. Star Basketball Club. The annual meeting of the Star Basketball Club was held last night, Miss Monica Gadsby being in the chair. It was decided to enter a B grade team in the competition. Miss D. O’Donnell was elected president and Miss O. Williams secretary. Child Injured. A child, Ngaire McCormack, of 26 Kuripuni Street, was admitted to Masterton Hospital last evening, suffering from an injury to her elbow, as the result of falling from a shed. Her condition this morning was reported to be quite satisfactory. Interhouse Dance. The Interhouse Association’s dance in the Town Hall on Saturday night should provide the greatest amount of enjoyment for patrons. Novelty dances ■will be a feature of the gathering. These popular dances are held fortnightly and are excellently conducted. Members of the fighting forces are specially welcome. Labour Conference. Attended by delegates representing 194 organisations, the fifth annual conference of the New Zealand Federation of Labour opened in the Trades Hall, Wellington, yesterday. It is expected to continue for three days. Re-elected unopposed as president for the fifth time, Mr A. McLagan is in the chair. The conference is not open to the Press.

Wreath Placed on Memorial. A wreath was laid at the foot of the Savage memorial, Bastion Point, Auckland, yesterday by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, to mark the second anniversary, which occurred last week, of Mr Savage’s death. Mr Fraser was accompanied by the Minister of Public Works, Mr Armstrong, representatives of the forces and local members of Parliament. Later Mr Fraser inspected various defence works.

Illicit Whisky Still. Fines totalling £7OO were inflicted by Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Gore, yesterday, when three men, all residents of the Ferndale district, were charge with having operated an illicit whisky still. John Kirk, farmer, on whose property a still was found, was fined £4OO, in default three months’ imprisonment; Alfred Clarence Kirk, labourer, was fined £lOO, in default three months’ imprisonment; James Henry Botting, farmer, was fined £2OO. It was stated by the police that Botting had been i fined £lOO in 1933 for having been illegally of illicit whisky.
