FOR GERMANS TRAPPED AT STARAYA RUSSA DESPERATE ENEMY ATTACKS REPELLED. NAZI STRONGHOLDS TAKEN ON OTHER FRONTS. LONDON, March 31. Tn Russia, the Germans are still making desperate attempts to relieve their trapped 16th Army at Staraya Russa. Drawing heavily on reserves, the Germans have made strong attacks supported by tanks, planes and artillery, but all these attacks have been re])clled by Soviet units. The Gormans have withdrawn to their original positions. In this area a single Soviet air formation has recently destroyed ten enemy planes. More enemy strongholds have been captured by the Russians in the Leningrad, Kalinin and Moscow areas. There is little news from the southern front, but the Germans report fierce fighting north-east of Taganrog and along the Donetz line. They also say that the weather is holding up operations in the Crimea. In two days fighting on the Kalinin front the Russians have recaptured 34 places. A correspondent of the “Pravda,” who gives this news, says a large quantity of war material was captured. Hundreds of Germans were killed and 90 officers and men were taken prisoner.
