OBITUARY
THE REV. PERCY PARIS. FORMER PRESIDENT OF METHODIST CONFERENCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Rev Percy Paris, minister of Wesley Church, Taranaki Street, died suddenly last night, after he had conducted services as usual. Mr Paris was a former chairman of the Wellington District Synod and also had been President of the New Zealand Conference.
MR GEORGE HENRY CLARKE. The death took. place at the Masterton Hospital on Saturday of Mr George Henry Clarke. The late Mt Clarke was one of the early pioneers of the district. He was born at Maidstone, Kent, 97 years ago. He came to New Zealand in the ship Wild Duck in the 60’s. After spending some time in the Castlepoint district he shifted to Hawke’s Bay, where he married, later going to the South Island, wheie he was engaged in public works, notably the Christchurch drainage scheme and Taieri Gorge railway. He finally settled in the Wairarapa in 1884, where he took up a block of land between Kopuaranga and Mauriceville. He retired in 1925 to reside in Masterton. His wife predeceased him three and a half years ago and four of his family also predeceased him. The surviving members are Messrs A. H. (Masterton), A. E. (Mauriceville), W. A. (Masterton), S. J. (Kopuaranga), J. B. (U.S.A.), and R. A. Clarke (Wellington) and Mesdames T. A. Wrigley (Levin) and C. W. Walker (Masterton). There are 29 grandchildren, nine being on active service, and nine great-grandchildren. The funeral took place this afternoon. MR W. E. TOXWARD. After a short illness, there passed away on Saturday evening another of Masterton’s well known citizens, Mr William' E. Toxward, son of the late Mr Christian Julius Toxward, of Wellington, Consul for Denmark. Mr Toxward was born at Wellington in 1863 and educated at Wellington College after attending the old Sydney Street school. He married Miss Buckeridge, daughter of the late Mr Edward Hern Buckeridge, of Kokotau, Carter-, ton, and was well known and liked throughout the Wairarapa. He seived in the Groat War with the New Zealand Engineers and was invalided home Of late years Mr Toxward had lived a retired life on account of his health. He leaves a brother, Mr A. J. Toxward (Hastings), a widow, two sons. Messrs B. W. Toxward (Wiaroa) and F D Toxward (Air Force, Wigram), two daughters, Mrs McCartney (Auckland) and Mrs Inder (Masterton) and five grandchildren, fc wnom the district will extend sinceie sympathy. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the chapel of Hyde’s Funei Service, following a seivice at 2 o.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.
MRS EDITH HORNER. The death of Mrs Edith Horner occurred yesterday at her residence, Essex Street, Masterton. The late Mrs Horner, who was in her 76th year, was the eldest daughter of he late Mr and Mrs Tathani, Homewood, East Coast, and had resided in Masterton for the past fifteen years. Her husband predeceased her several yeais ago. She leaves a family of four daughters. Mesdames Guy Wagg and Claience Meredith and Miss Edith Horner, all of Mastertoil, and Mrs Jack Nicol (Waikaremoana) and two sons, Messrs Eric Horner (Masterton) and Frank Horner (Eketahuna). There are eight grandchildren. Mrs Mcßae (Te Kuiti) and Mrs Laird Meredith (Masterton) are sisters. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon, leaving the residence, following a service at 3 p.m., fqr the Masterton Cemetery.
