FRENCH HOPES

AWAITING DAY OF LIBERATION. Charlie, Geoffrey and Leslie of the R.A.F. were adopted in 1939 by a family somewhere in France, the head of which wrote to General de Gaulle. “General,—We, a French family ruined by two wars and deprived of our children, are with you in thought. Confident we remain, putting our trust in you and in the Frenchmen who are by your side and in the English. Oh that we could be as you are and not have to rub shoulders with the invader! But we are strong and will resist. “Yes, we shall see the English again! All the French are waiting for them. Are they not part of us? How could we deny them today! “In the winter of 1939 we adopted three members of the R.A.F., Charlie, Geoffrey and Leslie, and they passed Christmas with us in our home, with cakes and champagne. They left us with regret on May 17, 1940, taking a bottle of champagne we gave them as a souvenir. . “English aeroplanes pay us a visit from time to time, and we long for the day they will land. “Patience, courage, confidence. Our liberators will come some day, and we will, shout with joy, ‘Vive de Gaulle!’ ‘Vive la France!’ ‘Vivent les Anglais!”
