WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ANNUAL MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Pirinoa Women’s Institute was held in the -Memorial Hall, the president (Mrs Spicer) presided over a fair attendance. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Miss Scrimgeour; vice-presidents, Mesdames Mclntosh Junr., Carter and Atkinson; committee, Mesdames Lovegrove, Sutton, Macdonald, Spicer, Gaudin, Thomas and T. Hume; secretary, Mrs Priest; treasurer, Mrs Spicer. The retiring president (Mrs Spicer) in reviewing the activities of the Institute during the year, thanked the members for their hearty co-operation and said that the same measure of support would be given to her successor, who she felt sure would direct the affairs of the Institute with credit. Mrs Spicer referred to the splendid work of the members in various war efforts. During the year members knitted helmets, jerseys were made for the Army and Navy, parcels of flannel clothing forwarded to the Lady Galway Guild, cases of fruit and cake to the Seamen's Mission for the men of the Merchant fleet, and large hampers for the A.N.A. Club, Wellington, while monetary donations had been made to the Cinderella Club, Wellington. The president also stated that 68 parcels had been sent overseas for the soldiers from the district. Mrs Spicer was the recipient of a gift from the members in appreciation of the splendid services rendered by her during her term of office. Mrs Spicer suitably thanked the members for their gift. Miss Scrimegour stated that she would endeavour to do her best to carry out her duties as president. The points prize for the year was won by Mrs H. Gaudin, with Mrs Spicer second. The junior points prize was won by Miss N. Mclntosh. The prize for the best bloom for the year was awarded to Mrs H. Gaudin. The hostesses were Mesdames Thomas, Mclntosh Senr., and Misses Priest and Mclntosh. Personal Items.

The citation of the award of the Military Medal to Lance Corporal Len Lovegrove, son of Mr and Mrs F. Lovegrove, of Pirinoa, states that he was wireless operator in Sergeant Riddell’s tank when attacking the enemy outside Bardia on December 18. After the tank had been knocked out, Lance Corporal Lovegrove directed the guns on to the enemy and kept up a heavy and sustained fire while the Sergeant was extricating the wounded driver. He then descended from the disabled truck and, under heavy fire, assisted Sergeant Riddell to carry the driver to temporary safety. Prior to enlistment Corporal Lovegrove was an officer of the Post and Telegraph Department. Mr A. Manihera left for Taihape on Monday. Pilot Officer Martin Hume writing to relatives here from England, states that he is well and has had several successful flights and engagements over enemy territory. Miss M. Mutana returned to Waipukurau on Monday. Miss Joan Lovegrove, Wellington, was a visitor to Pirinoa at the weekend. Mrs M. Waiwera has returned home. Mrs D. Tikao is staying with Mrs Ahipene, South Featherston. Mr Geo. Matthews has returned from Wellington.

Euchre Party and Dance. A euchre party and dance was held in the Pirinoa Hall on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance, visitors being present from as far north as Eketahuna. The card prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs S. Mclntosh 1, Mrs McKenzie 2. Men: Mr Priest 1, Mr Riwai 2. The lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Joan Lovegrove and partner. Winners of the chocolates were: Miss Mclntosh and Mr Gallagher (Masterton). The M.C. was Mr Mclntosh while the music was supplied by a local orchestra.
