ALFREDTON

PATRIOTIC SOCIETY GAMES NIGHT. i (“Times-Age” Special.) I The fortnightly games night conducted by the Patriotic Society was held on Saturday evening. There was a very large attendance. The winners in the euchre were; Ladies: Miss M. Smith; men, Mr H. Burch. In the competitions a box of groceries which was won by L/Cpl. F. McDonald realised £2 18s 3d. A box of biscuits donated by Mr Athol Hull realised £2 13s 6d and was won by Mr R. Low. Donations were received from Mrs J. Parsonson ss, and Mrs W. Brannigan 10s. Greatly appreciated was a donation of 18s 6d from the local school children, the amount received for their collection of ergot. The following goods were auctioned by Mr H. Burch:—Cabbage donated by Mr E. Anderson, realised 2s 2d; cabbages donated by Mr G. Godinagh, 3s Id; marrows and grapes from Mr G. Napier, 19s 7d; pumpkins, carrots and a fowl. £1 11s 3d; lamb donated by Mr J. Smith Senr., £1 12s. The takings for the evening amounted to £l6 6s. The hostesses were Mesdames L. Cooper and E. McLean and Miss J. McLean. Red Cross Society. The members of the Red Cross Society met on Saturday afternoon and after a lecture in hygiene and food values given by Mrs M. Stone-Wigg, the time was spent in making and rolling bandages. Mrs Stone-Wigg delivered to the Home Guard a lecture on “First Aid.” Memorial Service. On Sunday morning a memorial service in connection with the late Sergeant Hylton George was held in the Public Hall. The Women’s Auxiliary and Home Guard paraded and also the soldiers home on leave. There was a very large attendance. The Rev. G. E. Williams conducted the service. The sermon was based on the text, 14th Chapter of St. John Ist and 2nd verse, “Let not your heart be troubled.” Appropriate hymns were sung. Personal Items. Soldiers who spent the weekend with their parents were:—Private S. Smith, Private W. Algie, L/Cpl. A. Algie, Cpl. I. McDonald and L/Cpl. F. McDonald. Mrs Marton, who has been the guest of Mrs Clayworth, has returned to, Wellington. ;
