FEATHERSTON
BONDS FOR BOMBERS DISPLAY ON THURSDAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the National Savings Committee was held last evening. Mr Bloxam presided. It was decided to hold a display in the town, commencing at 2 o’clock on Thursday, in which the Scottish Pipe Band would participate. There will, also be on exhibition a Universal carrier, one of the latest motor vehicles for army service. A member of the Post and Telegraph staff will be in attendance in the vicinity of the War Memorial to sell Bonds for Bombers of £l, £lO and £lOO denominations.
Women’s War Service. A committee meeting of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary was held recently, Mrs Riddiford presiding in the absence of Miss Card. Mrs Riddiford was appointed to interview girls of 20 and 21! who had to enrol by March 25. A report was received from Miss Joan Marshall, convener of the Girls’ Committee, relative to the activities of the junior members of the Auxiliary. Great credit is due to the members of the Signalling Corps, headed by Miss Marshall, who have collected funds for their uniforms and equipment. Patriotic Appeal. A well-attended meeting was held in the Racing Club’s office last night to discuss the raising of funds for the new appeal. Mr J. W. Card was in the chair. The Wairarapa quota is £26,000, of which the Featherston district is to contribute approximately £lBOO. It was decided to zone the district and appoint various committees to make personal contact with the residents.
The following collectors were appointed:—Featherston town, Mr R. P. Hardy; Tauherenikau, Mr W. Sadler; Kaiwaiwai, Mr R. W. Fuge; Kahutara and Pahautea, Mr J. C. Bidwill; South Featherston, Mr P. A. Wilton; Western Lake, Mr R. W. Matthews; Underhill Road, Mr Chas. Buck. The following social committee was appointed:—No. 1 zone, Mrs Carlyon; No. 2 zone. Mrs Sharp; Tauherenikau, Mrs Quentin Donald; South Featherston, Mrs Arch. Clark; Kahutara and Pahautea, Mrs Collins; Western Lake, Mrs Robbins.
A valuable piece of jewellery was offered by Mrs Elgar, to be raffled for funds for the appeal. The secretary undertook to make the necessary enquiries for permission ot hold the raffle. A letter of thanks is to be forwarded to Messrs D. Holland and P. Habib, who have entered camp, for their work as secretary and treasurer of the Junior Entertainrhent Committee. Miss B. Currie was appointed secretary in place of Mr Holland.
Mrs Chas. Elgar and Mrs M. Williams were elected to the committee.
Birthday Party. A 21st birthday party was held on Saturday night at the residence of Mr and Mrs F. Hood, Kahutara. in honour of their daughter Lucy. A large number of friends and relatives were present. The time was spent in games, dancing and singing. Mr Playle proposed the toast of the guest of honour, and Mr Pope proposed the toast of Mr and Mrs Hood and family. Personal. Privates A. W. Juno and I. Feast were home foi' the week-end. Red Cross Society. The Red Cross Society’s room was full yesterday, when a euchre tournament was held. Miss Esma Card was the winner of the prize at cards. Mrs Laws'on won the eggs, and Miss B. Cuff the grapes. Gifts and donations were received from Mesdames Riddiford, Batty, A. Viles and McKenna.
