ENEMY CLAIM

ATTACK ON BRITISH CONVOY CRUISER & MERCHANTMAN ALLEGEDLY SUNK. SOME CONFLICTING DETAILS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) LONDON, March 23. An Italian communique states: “Italian torpedo planes attacked a British convoy bound for Malta, sinking a cruiser and a 10,000 ton merchantman and heavily damaging two warships and a merchantman.” A German communique says: “A British convoy was attacked ofl' the Gulf of Sirte. One merchantman was sunk and two others were put out of action.” The Berlin radio, quoting the Stefani news agency, says the convoy consisted of six transports, four destroyers and a larger warship. This conflicts with an assertion by the “Giornale D’ltalia” that the convoy comprised twenty vessels, including five cruisers and seven destroyers.
