CARTERTON

S.M. COURT LIQUOR CASES. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. P. Lawry presided over the monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court yesterday. In connection with the case D. T. King v Annie and Percy Humphrey, a claim for £25, Mr Lawry stated that he would give his judgment in writing later. In a judgment summons case, Kenners, Ltd., Wellington, v A. V. Stevens, a claim for £l6 7s lid, defendant was ,ordered to pay £5 by the end of March and the balance at the rate of £1 per month until the debt had been extinguished. The police proceeded against W. A. Pinfold and Jas. K. Foss for having been on licensed premises, the Royal Oak Hotel, after hours on February 18. The former was fined £1 with 10s costs. The charge against Foss was dismissed. The proprietor of the hotel, W. H. Steel, pleaded guilty to having served liquor after hours. He was fined £5, with 10s costs. The Traffic Inspector, Mr A. E. Ansell, proceeded against W. Wong on a charge of having operated a heavy motor vehicle on December 9 carrying a load of lime which considerably exceeded the weight allowed by the regulations and for which the truck was licensed. Mr D. L. Taverner, who appeared for defendant, said that his client had purchased lime at Gladstone for use in his market garden at Greytown. The sellers had found it impossible to deliver the lime owing to the petrol restrictions and Wong was advised to carry the lime on his lorry and to save a second trip of some 15 miles decided to make one trip. No dishonest motive was intended, the saving of petrol being the object. The Magistrate, after having heard Mr Taverner and Inspector Ansell, said he would give his decision in Masterton today, which was that defendant would be fined £1 with 10s costs. W. C. Dudley was charged by the Traffic Officer, Mr A. E. Ansell, that on December 10 between Greytown and Carterton he operated a heavy motor vehicle at a speed exceeding the maximum of 25 miles per hour provided for such a class of vehicle. Defendant, who pleaded not guilty, was fined 10s with 12s costs. Garrity Bros., Greytown, for whom Mr J. F. Thompson appeared, were charged with having carried on a goods service between Martinborough and Featherston otherwise than in accordance with the authority of service issued under the transport of goods regulations, 1936. Defendants were fined 10s, with costs 10s.

Dance at Clareville. On Friday evening a dance will be held in the Clareville Social Hall, the proceeds from which will be in aid of the soldiers’ fund. REGENT THEATRE “INVISIBLE WOMAN." A double programme tonight will be headed by the splendid comedy, “Invisible Woman" (featuring Virginia Bruce and John Howard), and the sensational drama, “The Saint’s Vacation’’ (starring Hugh Sinclair and Sally Grey).
