PATRIOTIC APPEAL

PLANS FOR CAMPAIGN.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Following on the initial meeting under the chairmanship of Mr T. Jordan the Patriotic Appeal Committee met yesterday to formulate plans for the forthcoming campaign. There were present Messrs J. A. Betts (in the chair), E. M. Hodder, J. C. D. Mackley, A. D. Low and J. Jameson. Mr A. Bennett, who was “John Bull” in the last campaign, agreed to act as secretary and treasurer for this campaign. The question of his office was not finally decided but it was hoped to work in with the convenience of the chairman. The Ladies’ Committee had requested that a shop be erected on the site of the Air Queen’s Dugout in front of the Hotel Midland and permission had been obtained from the Hotel Midland for temporary premises to be placed there. Mr Hodder reported that the Master Builders’ Association had agreed to put this in hand at once and it was expected that the shop would be ready for operation by next Tuesday provided the weather was fine. During the day a meeting of the various women’s organisations was held, Mrs Jordan presiding. Mrs O’Hara Smith was appointed secretary to the movement. It was decided that the Midland shop be opened every day and controlled by the various women s organisations, such shop to remain open for the next six weeks. The question of a name for the shop came up, and it was decided that a competition be held for a suitable name, entries to be Is with a prize of ss, these entries to be put in an envelope and marked “Competition” and handed to Mr Bennett as secretary of the general appeal.
