VALIANT AIRMAN
FLIGHT-LIEUTENANT ORCHARD, D.F.C. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, March 17. The full citation of the posthumous award of the D.F.C. to Flight Lieutenant Russel Ernest Orchard, of Christchurch, states that he displayed outstanding ability as a captain of aircraft. Despite odds, he invariably pressed home attacks with the greatest determination. On more than one occasion he brought his plane back to its base after severe enemy damage. Lieutenant Orchard was previously reported missing, but his death is now presumed to have occurred on September 19 last.
