MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL STATE HOUSING PLANS. PENALTY ON UNPAID RATES. The monthly meeting .of the Masterton Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presiding over a full attendance of councillors. The Wairarapa Interhouse Association accepted the terms for the use of the Municipal Hall for weekly basketball for 20 weeks from April 1 and the council agreed to allow the association the use of the Park Oval on Easter Saturday or Monday for a proposed military pageant, the proceeds to be paid to the local patriotic funds. Mr R. G. Sayer, of the Park staff, was granted leave of absence for military service. An application from the District Commissioner, Girl Guides, for the use of the Municipal Hall, Social Hall and Lecture Room on Saturday afternoons was left in the hands of the chairman of the Hall Committee with power to act.

The Works Committee, upon reconsideration decided to withdraw its offer made in connection with an application to have lights on premises belonging to C. E. Daniell Estate, Queen Street, connected with the street lighting system. Messrs Hart, Daniell and Hart had written, regarding the application, asking what lighting costs had been charged for other connections. Councillor W. White entered a protest regarding a statement by Mr H. H. Daniell ,who had said that he had been treated discourteously by the council. Councillor C. E. Grey: “In what way was the council discourteous?” • The Mayor: “Well, I am at a loss to know.” Mr T. A. Russell was authorised to attend to urgent district health duties during the absence of Mr Eliott on annual leave. The Director of Housing Construction submitted a tentative plan of subdivision for the Kummer Estate, Cole Street, for State houses. As some of the allotments set out did not reach the required minimum area it was recommended that a Housing Department draughtsman be invited to come to Masterton to discuss with the Works Committee matters in relation to the proposed subdivision. A resolution was passed imposing a ten per cent penalty on all rates unpaid after March 26,
