COUNTY AFFAIRS

MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING HELD YESTERDAY. HOLDING OF CONFERENCE OPPOSED. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon. The chairman, Mr E. W. Cheetham, presided, and there were also present Councillors D. Bonnett, A. Forsberg, A. Gray, J. H. MacDonald and O. Welch. The treasurer’s report which showed a credit balance of £1324 7s 9d was adopted. Accounts amounting to £1239 10s 9d were passed for payment. A letter was received from the county engineers, Messrs Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt stating that plans for the repairs to a bridge on the Master-ton-Weber Highway had now been approved. It was left to the chairman to take steps to advertise for tenders. A letter was received from the N.Z. Counties’ Association asking for the council’s opinion as to whether or not a conference should be held this year. It was the unanimous opinion of councillors that in view of the present war situation it was not desirable to hold a conference. The clerk was instructed to advise the Counties’ Association accordingly. A letter was received from the county engineers stating that the proposed new bridge to be built on the Mauriceville-Hastwell main highway near the Hastwell cemetery had now been approved from an engineering point of view by the Public Works Department. The engineers pointed out. however, that the Main Highways Board desired in view of the present emergency situation that the renewal of the structure should be deferred and that the calling of tenders was being made the subject of a special report which the Board was obtaining. The council would be advised further in this connection as early as possible. The clerk reported that a supply of dog collars would be available within the next few days.

Tht Traffic Inspector’s report for January was received in which he stated that the conduct of traffic generally in the county was found to be satisfactory. Advice was received from the Wairarapa Hospital Board regarding the proposed application for sanction of a loan of £15,000 for the purpose of additions and alterations at the Greytown Hospital. It was agreed that no objection could be made to the proposals as submitted. The chairman reported that the manufacture of uniforms for the Mauriceville unit of the Home Guard was now under way. The County Overseer, Mr C. Seymour, reported that satisfactory progress had been made with county work during the month. Prospective work was discussed and arranged for.
