CARTERTON
ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows was held last evening, P.G. Sister K. Mitchell presiding. One member declared on and off the sick funds. Two members took up increased insurance benefits of £lOO and £125, respectively. Sick pay totalling £7 13s 4d was passed for payment. P.G. Bro. G. S. Bruce reported on the business transacted at the District Conference, and was accorded a vote of thanks. Farewell Gathering. A very enjoyable time was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs F. Sewell Sent’., Carterton, on Saturday night, when occasion was taken to bid farewell to Mr Francis Sewell prior to his entering a R.N.Z.A.F. camp on Friday. Games and singing were indulged in during the evening. At supper a number of toasts were honoured including the health of Mr F. Sewell, Mr J. Sewell (overseas), and Miss Daphne Sewell (W.A.A.F.), proposed by Mr M. Clarke, Masterton. Speaking on behalf of the Masterton staff of the Electric Power Board, Mr M. Clarke wished Mr Francis Sewell the best of luck and a speedy return. Mr H. Thomas spoke on behalf of the members of the Carterton staff of the Power Board. Mr H. Broome proposed the toast of the ladies, and Mrs E. Poole responded. Mr F. Sewell Sens., proposed the health of the returned soldiers of the last war and the present one. Mr C. Erickson (who recently returned from Greece and Crete) replied. Mr Erickson proposed a toast in honour of his dead comrades. Mi* Clarke asked Mr Francis Sewell to accept from his mother, father, sisters and. brothers, a money belt. Mr Francis Sewell suitably replied. The gathering was brought to a close by the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” and “Auld Lang Syne.” Guests were present from Pahiatua, Martinborough and Masterton.
Personal Items. Mrs E. I. Poole and daughter Jean, of Pahiatua, who have been staying with Mr and Mrs F. Sewell, Belvedere Street, Carterton, have returned home. Mrs M. Lucas, Waitara, is the guest of Mrs J. C. Harp, Belvedere Street. Women’s Division Card Party. The card party held on Saturday night by the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the proceeds from which will go to comforts for soldiers fund, was well attended. The prizes were Avon as follows: —Ladies: Mrs Jackson Senr., 1; Mrs Edwards, 2. Men: Mr A. Paterson, 1; Mr J. Lenihan, 2. Easter Monday Dance. The MatarawarDalefield Women’s Institute will hold a dance in the Dalefield Hall on the night of Easter Monday. S.M. Court. At the monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court tomorrow afternoon several interesting cases will come before the Magistrate. School Children Dig Trenches. The older boys at the Carterton District High School were busy yesterday digging trenches in the vicinity of the school buildings. The work was carried out under the supervision of the headmaster (Mr Martin) and Mr Hardie.
REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. Tonight’s .programme is headed by “The Night of January 16,” in which Robert Preston and Ellen Drew have the leading roles in what is an exciting murder mystery.
