FEATHERSTON

WRESTLING CLUB TO CEASE OPERATIONS DURING WAR. (“Times-Age” Special.) At a meeting of the committee of the Featherston Wrestling Club it was decided to close down fox - the duration of the war. This club has been in existence for 10 years and has trained some splendid wrestlers. Service Club. The Service Club hostesses for the weekend were: —Friday, Mrs H. R. Bloxam; Saturday, Mrs J. McKenna; Sunday, Mrs J. Elliot. Service of Prayer. There was a very good attendance at the Citizens’ United Service held in the Town Hall last evening. The prayers were led by the Rev. W. S. Young (Wellington) and Captain Murray. The Rev. J. R. Higgs took for his text, “Is it nothing to you all ye that pass by,” showing how the truth applies to the church and the war.. The combined choirs sang the anthem “God the All Terrible.” Soldiers’ Dance. At the weekly soldiers’ dance on Saturday night exhibitions of Highland Fling and Sword Dance were given by members of the Scottish Regiment. Mr Peter Habib was M.C. and the music was provided for the dancing by Mr S. Te Tau. Extras were played by Miss Audrey Higginson. The supper tables were decorated by Mrs Alexander. Persona] Items. Last Saturday the staff of G. Cook Ltd. met to bid farewell to Mr George Hanker, who has been in the grocery department for some time, and who is to enter camp this week. On behalf of the staff, the manager, Mr Frank White, presented him with a wristlet watch and said that Mr Hanker would leave the firm carrying away with him the best wishes for his welfare of the whole staff. Mr Hanker ■ suitably replied. Playing members of the Haunui Croquet Club on Friday tendered a farewell gathering to’Mrs Hankers on the eve of her leaving the district. Half hour games were played in the early afternoon, the prizes being won by Mrs Rasmussen and Mrs Watson. Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion. The tables were artistically decorated in the club colours by Miss Viles. The president, Miss Eva Card, presented Mrs Hankers with a beautiful handbag from the members. Mrs Hankers suitably replied. COSY THEATRE WEDNESDAY’S PROGRAMME. . Wednesday night’s programme will be headed by the brilliant Bernard Shaw drama, “Major Barbara,” with Wendy Hiller, Rex Harrison and Robert Morley in the chief roles.
