FIERCE FIGHTING

ON RUSSIAN SOUTHERN FRONT STIFFER ENEMY RESISTANCE. OPERATIONS IN CRIMEA & ELSEWHERE. LONDON, March 15. A Russian communique states that there is no material change on the various fronts. The Moscow radio reports fierce fighting on the southern front and stiffer German resistance. Heavy fighting in the Donetz and Crimea is admitted by Berlin. The Moscow radio states that another strong fortified position had fallen in the Smolensk area. The ring seems to be closing round Viazma, a key town on the only line of retreat open to the Germans. The Russians have recaptured three more places on the Staraya Russa area after a fierce struggle. On this front the Germans are using new Messerschmitts, which are only entrusted to crack pilots. Several of these planes have been shot down.
