CARTERTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ELECTION OF OFFICERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Women’s Institute was held in the Kahutara Hall on Tuesday, Mrs Elbe presiding. One new member was welcomed. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs B. Elbe (re-: elected); vice-presidents, Mesdames W. Pope and Hood; treasurer, Miss L. Hood; committee, Mesdames Pottinger, A. Corlet, Harland, Wilton, V. Fenwick, N. Duffy, M. McKenna, T. Hood, Miss Dimes; librarian, Miss Dimes; correspondent and competition secretary, Mrs Pottinger; tea secretary, Mrs Pope; wool secretary, Mrs Corlet. Mrs Pope was competition winner for the year. A letter was received from Private D. McKay acknowledging a parcel-sent to him. The competitions resulted as follows: Best jar of jam, Mrs Henderson 1, Mrs D. Wilson 2, Best bloom, Mrs D. Wilson 1, Mrs T. Hood 2. The hostesses were Mesdames V. Fenwick and R. Welch. SERVICE CLUB EUCHRE PARTY LAST NIGHT. The euchre party held in the Service Club last evening was well attended. The card prizes were won by Mrs Cassidy (first) and Mrs Baker (second). Mrs Cross won the lucky number. Miss J. Wilson won a competition held. COSY THEATRE DOUBLE PROGRAMIVIE TONIGHT. There will be a double programme tonight—“ Target for Tonight” (a splendid war picture) and “Crooks Tour,” an outstanding comedy-drama with Naunton Wayne and Basil Bradford in the chief roles.

PUBLIC LIBRARY NEW BOOKS ADDED. (“Times-Age” Special.) ' The following new books have been added to the shelves at the Carterton Public Library:— “Hidden Passage,” F. E. Young; “Strawberry Roan,” A. G. Street; “Mrs Tim Carries On,” D. E. Stevenson; “The Convoys Pass,” Stella Morton; “The Earth is the Lord’s,” Taylor Caldwell; “The Joyful Jays,” J. C. Lenehan; “Measure For Murder,” Clifford Witting; “Imperial Mountain,” Nora Strange; “Watershed,” Nigel G. Tranter; “How Was it Done,” Mark Cross; “Donkey Serenade,” George Sava; “Diplomatically Speaking,” Lloyd C. Griscon. RED CROSS TRANSPORT SUCCESSFUL DANCE. The Red Cross Transport Corps held a very enjoyable dance in the State Theatre, Carterton, last night. The hall was filled. The arrangements were ably supervised by a capable ladies’ committee of which Mrs M. A. Hastie was secretary. Splendid music was supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s orchestra. Much appreciated extras were played by Miss Verna Sorensen, Private Crawford and Mr Hemi. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr V. J. Ashton. A buffet supper was provided. The committee appreciate the help of those who made the gathering such a success. PLUNKET SOCIETY MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Plunket Society there were present Mesdames W. J. G. Wells, J. Udy, N. R. Armstrong, W. Candy, W. Dyer, C. C. Callender and W. S. Montgomery. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Traff, Robinson and Steel. The Nurse’s report for February stated, inter alia: New cases, mothers 3, babies 3, all breast fed; visits to homes, new cases 6, old cases 51, oldei’ children 15: visits to rooms, adults 97, babies 89, pre-school children 15. General progress quite good. Greytown Subbranch; New cases, nil, mothers 1, babies 1 (artificially fed); visits to homes, new cases nil, old cases 40, old-' er children 7; visits to rooms, mothers 35, babies 33; pre-school children 7. A letter was read from the Wairarapa representative of the Plunket Society, asking the local president to join the other Wairarapa presidents on the House Committee of the Karitane Hospital, which is being established at Rotatawai, Featherston.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE PARKVALE MEETING. Mrs N. Peacock presided over the annual meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute, Mrs Adams being unable to be present owing to a bereavement. Warrington leader ■ of the juniors. i Two new members, Miss E. Cadwall lader and F. Denbee, were elected. The competition for the afternoon was won by Miss E. Mr and Mrs D. N. Adams, of Parkvale have received a cable message that their son, who was connected with the Fleet Air Arm, is among the missing, believed killed. Much sympathy is expressed with Mr and Mrs Adams in their bereavement. Women’s Division Flower Show. The final results in connection with the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union flower display were: Mrs G. Couper, 40pts, 1; Mesdames E. Allen and W. Knowles, 23pts., equal, 2; Mesdames P. Hodder and K. Reid, 12 pts, equal 3. Swimming Club. The weekly competitions of the Carterton Amateur Swimming Club will take place in the Municipal Baths, Pembroke Street, Carterton, on Saturday afternoon. Considerable interest is being taken in the competition for the Sorensen Cup and the King Memorial Rose Bowl. Those who have a “leg in” for these trophies are Noel Desmond and Bryan Desmond. Events will be held for soldiers. REGENT THEATRE DOUBLE PROGRAMME TONIGHT. A double programme will be shown tonight—“ One Night in the Tropics” (starring Allen Jones and Nancy Kelly) and “Naval Academy” (featuring Freddie Bartholomew and James Lydon), both being particularly good pictures.
