AMERICAN AID
WILL BE FELT SOON AND LEAD TO ALLIED VICTORY. GENERAL SMUTS CONFIDENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.10 p.m.) CAPE TOWN, March 11. The weight of American support would soon be felt and would lead to an overwhelming Allied victory, said General Smuts (Prime Minister) in a speech in Parliament. He denied, however, statements that Britain had left her friends in the lurch and was sheltering behind the United States. General Smuts said events in the Far East showed that brunt of the fighting had been borne by Britishers. “Before the Japanese can take South Africa,” he added, “every native, white and coloured, who can be armed, will be armed.” Regarding Madagascar, General Smuts said South Africa was on friendly relations with Vichy and had not the least idea of aggression unless Madagascar were used as an enemy base.
