Drakeford, in a supplementary communique last night, confirmed that the R.A.A.F. had inflicted serious damage on seven enemy ships at Salamaua. Four were left burning, two sinking and one was beached with its stern awash. One of the burning vessels is described as a very large transport. Another received six direct hits from large bombs, in addition to several near misses being recorded. Owing to the nature of explosions under water, near misses frequently cause damage below the waterline. GUERILLA WARFARE TRAINING OF AUSTRALIAN VOLUNTEERS.
