USED BY THE JAPANESE AT DARWIN ATTACKS ON HOSPITAL SHIP & RESCUE BOATS. HOSPITAL ON SHORE BOMBED DELIBERATELY. Japanese planes which bombed Darwin bore British and American markings, said a member of the crew of the hospital ship which Was attacked. He added that boats picking up men swimming in the harbour were deliberately machine-gunned and the Japanese also bombed a hospital on shore, which was clearly marked. SERIOUS DAMAGE DONE TO ENEMY SHIPS AT SALAMAUA. FEDERAL AIR MINISTER’S STATEMENT. (Received This Day, 10.20 a.m.) CANBERRA, Thia Day. The Air Minister, Mr A. S. Drakeford, in a supplementary communique last night, confirmed that the R.A.A.F. had inflicted serious damage on seven enemy ships at Salamaua. Four were left burning, two sinking and one was beached with its stern awash. One of the burning vessels is described as a very large transport. Another received six direct hits from large bombs, in addition to several near misses being recorded. Owing to the nature of explosions under water, near misses frequently cause damage below the waterline. GUERILLA WARFARE TRAINING OF AUSTRALIAN VOLUNTEERS. (Received Tin's Day, 1.0 p.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. The Minister for the _ Army (Mr Forde) announced that picked members of the Volunteer Defence Corps were being given special tihihing in ■t guerilla warfare by Major Ermine t Andrews, a British officer who won the ' Victoria Cross at Dunkirk.
