CARTERTON

WOMEN’S DIVISION MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Mrs K. Reid presided over an excellent attendance of members. Two new members were enrolled. Mrs K. Groves, president of the Wairarapa Provincial Council was present and briefly addressed the meeting on the Palmerston North rest room. A “bring and- buy” stall realised the sum of £6 16s sd, which is to be forwarded to the Rest Room authorities. Mrs H. Hodder’s report on the euchre parties held to buy wool for soldiers’ comforts, was read. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Plodder for her good work. The results of the monthly competitions are as follow:—Best collection of ergot: Mrs G. Campbell and Mrs R. Foreman 1, Mrs K. Reid 2, Mrs W. Knowles 3. Best bloom: Mrs Knowles 1. Mrs Couper 2, Mrs Hicks 3. Best shrub: Mrs Couper 1 and 2, Mrs Allen 3. Sponge cake: Mrs McKenzie 1,2, and 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames P. Edwards, Warrington, McLean, J. Daysh, E. Allen, A. Stretton, H. Peters, Corbett and Ordish.

ENJOYABLE DANCE

SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED. (“Times-Age” Special.) On Saturday evening there was a very good attendance at the State Theatre, Carterton, when a very enjoyable dance was held for the entertainment of men of the armed forces by the Y.M.C.A. management and the Citizens’ Committee. The music for the dancing was provided by Udy’s Orchestra. The M’s.C. were Messrs Keith Reid and P. Beere. These dances will be held each Saturday. Gift Parcels For Soldiers. Two hundred and twelve parcels are required by the Carterton and District Patriotic Committee this month for despatch overseas. Donations may be left at the office of the Carterton Borough Council or the Wairarapa South County Council. Personal Items. Mrs J. Wales is on a visit to her brother, Sergeant A. J. Cox, R.N.Z.A.F., Wellington. Accommodation of Evacuees. Residents of Carrington, Belvedere and Dalefield who are willing to accommodate evacuees are asked to communicate with the controller of accommodation. Miss Olive W. Wolters. REGENT theatre MUSICAL COMEDY. Tonight there will be presented the excellent musical comedy, “Pot of Gold,” featuring James Stewart and Paulette Goddard, and approved for Universal Exhibition.
