Recital of the Rosary. The first public recital of the Rosary, as directed by Archbishop O’Shea in his Lenten pastoral letter, was given at 5.15 p.m. yesterday in all the Roman Catholic Churches throughout New Zealand. St. Mary of the Angels’ Church in Wellington was crowded to overflowing, many worshippers kneeling on the concrete paths outside the building. The audible recital of the Rosary by such a large congregation had a most impressive effect. Check on Cars at Races. “From a check taken by officers of the Transport Department at the Trentham racecourse on Saturday it is obvious that many people are still travelling long distances to race meetings by car,” stated the Commissioner of Transport, Mr G. L. Laurenson, yesterday. Cars were seen with registration plates from New’ Plymouth, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Masterton, and other parts of the Wairarapa. Regular checking is continuing on the roads leading out of Wellington during the weekends and particular note made of the registered numbers of cars seen frequently. In these cases the source of their petrol supply is being investigated. Public Bequests. Under the will of the late Edward Orr Hurley, who practised for many years in Palmerston North as a barrister and solicitor, the following charitable bequests are provided:—£soo for the trustees of the Coleraine Cottage Hospital. Coleraine, County of Londonderry. £5OO for the trustees of the Bann Rowing Club, Coleraine. £lOOO for the trustees of All Saints’ Anglican Children’s Home, Palmerston North, for the general purposes of the home. Mr Hurley directed that it be made known that the gift to the. home is from his mother, the late Charlotte- Boswell Hurley. £lOOO for the council of Massey Agricultural College, Palmerston North, for the purpose of founding and establishing at the college a scholarhsip or bursary in a subject on the scientific side taught at the college, the scholarship to be known as “The John Alexander Hurley Scholarship, oi "The John Alexander Hurley Bursary.” John Alexander Hurley was a brothel of the late Mr E. O. Hurley.

Enrolment for Military Service. All naturalised male British subjects, single or married, between the ages of 18 and 46, are to enrol immediately for military service. This was announced last night by the Minister of National Service, Mr Semple, and follows a decision by the War Cabinet earlv in February that such persons would be included in the First and Second Divisoins of the General Reserve. To give effect to this decision, said Mr Semple, it was necessary to issue a proclamation calling on them to and this had now been signed by the Governor-General. “I must point out,” said the Minister, “that .all such persons must make application for enrolment immediately. Youths who are naturalised British subjects and who subsequently attain the age of 18 years must enrol within 28 days of their attaining that age. Mr Semple pointed out that many naturalised British subjects retained an alien nationality under foreign law. These persons, however, were required to emol in view of their naturalisation as British subjects.
