Old Linen Wanted.
Old linen is urgently needed for the Masterton Hospital. Donations, preferably of old sheets and pillowslips, can be left care of the Women’s National Welfare League, Page’s shop, Man Seriously Burned. Serious burns to the back and chest were received by Mr Gordon Anderson when the upper floor of an apartment house at 152 Sydney Street, Wellington, of which he was an occupant, was gutted by fire early yesterday morning. The other 11 people in the building escaped injury, but most lost all their personal possessions. Mi’ An-' derson was taken by the Free Ambulance to the hospital, where his condition last night was reported to be serious. Soldiers Entertained. The usual weekly Sunday evening free tea held at the Y.M.C.A. Rooms was conducted last evening by the ladies of the Knitting Circle, when a number of the soldiers on leave were entertained. The tables were tastefully decorated and were heavily laden with many appetising things. Mr Farrell welcomed the men and in reminiscent vein spoke of experiences while in preparation for duty in 1914. Corporal Jackson thanked the ladies on behalf of those present. Miss Ivcson played piano items during the tea and afterwards accompanied the men in a happy community rsing. Red Cross Society. The following donations to the Wairarapa Centre of the Red Cross Society are acknowledged: —Mr C. H. Spiers, room rent free duration of the war; C. E. Daniell, Ltd., shelving; J. Kerslake, furniture loaned for duration; donations from sub-centres, Pahiatua £2O, Hukanui £1 11s 6d, Mauriceville £2, country districts £25 (Ist instalment), Masterton £4O, Carterton £5, Greytown £lO. Pahautea-Kahutara £5, Featherston £25, and the Transport Services of the Wairarapa for providing free carriage to enable work for sick and wounded to be carried on in the Wairarapa free of cost.
Interhouse Dance. The Wairarapa Interhouse Association dance, held in the Municipal Hall on Saturday night, went with a swing, under the able direction of Mr J. Henderson as M.C. Barnes’s Orchestra provided the music for the dancing and an excellent buffet supper was served. The winners of the novelty dances were: Lucky partners, Miss Z. Fostcr and Mr L. Hunt; Miss Masters and Corporal Henderson; Lucky Spot, Mrs Kirk and Private Boney; Miss D. Nielson and Private Curtis. The committee has decided that no charge will be made for members of the forces at the association’s next dance on Saturday, March 21.
