NATIONAL WELFARE
MEETING OF MASTERTON LEAGUE. REPORTS ON MANY ACTIVITIES. The first monthly meeting for 1942 of the Women’s National Welfare League was held at the Midland Hotel yesterday, Miss Kummer presiding. There were also present Mesdames T. Jordan, S. Coradine, R. C. Drummond. S. J. Munn, McCracken, L. Hunter. E. J. Brown, R. Whyborn, A. W. McKenzie, S. Fletcher, F. Daniell, G. H. Collie’and Kilgour. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames H. P. Harrison, G. G. Tolhurst, H. E. Pither. S. L. P. Free, A. Carruthers, Misses Guild, Boddington, Beiliss and Vailence. Miss Kummer spoke of the members who had suffered bereavements, votes of sympathy being passed. Letters of appreciation were received from Miss Grant, matron of Masterton Hospital, and from Miss Higginson, matron of the Greytown Hospital, for help given by the league during 1941. A letter of thanks was received from Palliser Bay lighthouse for a large parcel of books and papers. The resignation of Mrs Arthur Henderson was received with regret. The secretary stated she had sent in an application to the T. G. Macarthy Trust for a grant. It was decided to write to Mrs Pither. of the Y.M.C.A. Auxiliary, stating that the league would be prepared to take its share of canteen work. A hamper would be sent to A.N.A. this month and anyone having goods or donations for same were requested to leave them at Ninnes’s shop before March 19. Miss Kummer and Mrs Fletcher reported that fortnightly visits to the public hospital had been made during the recent months. Literature was hard to get and anyone having some to spare was asked to leave it at Page s shop. The convenor had visitors for March 17 and 31. Mrs Drummond reported on the Christmas tree party at the hospital in December and also on a visit paid with gifts to No. 6 Ward on Christmas Eve. Miss Kummer and Miss Guild wore selected as delegates to the Rod Cross organisation for 1942. Mrs A. W. McKenzie reported on cases assisted during the last three months. It was decided that phone calls regarding socal welfare work be made to Miss Kummer, No. 1668, as Mrs McKenzie was so busy at the camouflage net room. The secretary reported that four lighthouses had been, supplied with generous parcels of literature.
