MARTINBOROUGH

S.M. COURT INTERESTING CASES. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly sitting of the S.M. Court on Wednesday some cases of more than ordinary interest were heard before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M. Tannant Arthur Herrick and Edward Bilbie Evans were charged with the excessive use of benzine in that both had procured more than the quantity permitted by law, the former by some 13 gallons and the latter, by about 47 gallons. Both defendants pleaded guilty, and were each fined £lO and costs. The Elmdale Dairy Company was charged with having supplied a quantity of benzine in excess of the legal allowance. Counsel for the defence submitted that the factory was shorthanded, and the manager so busy that he had no time to check the cards. The Magistrate stated that the methods in operation seemed very lax and careless, and would encourage irregularities. The company would be fined £lO on each of the two charges, with costs.
